save energy

and money when cooking

With the help of Feeding Wales, you've grown your own vegetables. . .  perhaps you even have a supply of home laid eggs, but costs can ramp up dramatically during cooking.  These simple, interesting and useful tips on low energy cooking include planned oven sharing, fire pits and using a BBQ or air frier.

The cost of domestic energy;  whether in the form of electricity, mains or bottled gas, is increasingly expensive.  With electricity currently costing @30p per kWh, more if you are using a pre-pay meter, every Kilowatt counts.

A saucepan wearing its lid loses 50% less energy into the air than the same pan topless.

Frozen batched vegetables ready to be microwaved

using your microwave

Whether cooking from raw, or reheating previously cooked and frozen meals, a microwave oven saves time, and money!

For example;  reheating a family-sized frozen meal in a fan oven (typically at 180C for 45 minutes), will use around 1.5 kWh. . .  adding 45p to your electricity bill.

The same frozen meal heated in an 800w microwave for 15 minutes on 'high' draws less than 0.3 kWh, about 10p!

Dice vegetables to cook them more quickly

don't chop, dice

When cooking any veg, simply dice into smaller pieces!

Every time you halve the size (volume) of chopped potatoes, carrots or swede, they will cook in just about half the time, saving half of the expensive electricity or gas.  Potatoes, for example, diced into half inch cubes, will be ready to mash in just ten minutes.

Yes, it's a couple of minutes extra preparation time, but the savings can be enormous!

Boil water before adding to pan

kettle tips

An electric kettle can save up to 30% of the energy used, compared to heating water in a saucepan. . .  so pre-boil your cooking water before adding to the pan!

When making a cuppa, we are told to boil just enough water. . .  but we also know, from experience, how difficult it is to judge.  Keep a thermos flask alongside the kettle and pour the remainder of the boiling water into the flask, ready for the next tea or coffee.

Cheap cooking on the barbecue

barbecue or firepit

During the summer months, consider making better use of that old barbecue tucked away in the shed!

Bottled gas or charcoal BBQs are both significantly cheaper to use than traditional ovens or grills, especially if you batch cook.

Anything grown in your garden can be barbecued, all it needs is a little imagination. . .  and the novelty can encourage children to eat what would otherwise require a fight!  See the section 'Kids v Vegetables'
